Slow down when somebody creates urgency. Verify the vehicle, the person and the payment independently before making a decision.
BUYING SAFELY
Check the advert and seller
- Be suspicious of prices far below comparable vehicles or sellers who refuse a viewing.
- Confirm the address, identity, registration and VIN match the vehicle and documents.
- Use the official vehicle checker and arrange an independent inspection when appropriate.
MEETINGS
Plan safer viewings and test drives
- Meet in daylight at a genuine home or business address and tell somebody where you are.
- Sellers should check the driver’s licence and insurance and accompany test drives.
- Buyers should never feel pressured to transfer a deposit before seeing the vehicle.
PAYMENTS
Recognise payment and finance fraud
- Confirm cleared funds in your own bank account; screenshots and confirmation emails can be forged.
- Never share passwords, card details, remote-access codes or one-time passcodes.
- Do not forward money to a courier, shipping company or third party for an alleged overpayment.
ONLINE SECURITY
Protect accounts and report concerns
- Use a unique password and treat unexpected sign-in or payment links as suspicious.
- Keep conversations on traceable channels and retain advert, message and payment records.
- Report suspicious MotorHarbour activity through the contact page. Contact your bank and Action Fraud promptly if money may be at risk.
