Advert description
Mercedes-Benz E200 W124 Estate, affectionately known as “Bertha” Sadly, the time has come for Bertha to find a new home. If you're looking for a tiny modern crossover with mood lighting, an iPad glued to the dashboard and an engine the size of a kettle, this probably isn't for you. This is a proper Mercedes estate from the era when Mercedes-Benz appeared to design cars with the intention of them outliving their owners. Bertha is a W124-generation E-Class estate: huge load space, wonderfully simple engineering, classic Mercedes styling and that unmistakable bank-vault feel that made these cars famous. She's not pretending to be an AMG, she isn't slammed on questionable wheels and nobody has attempted to turn her into something she isn't. She's just Bertha. THE CAR Mercedes-Benz E200 Estate W124 / S124 generation 2.0-litre petrol Automatic The facelift E200 estate was produced in the 1993-96 period, with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing around 136 PS. These estates are becoming increasingly difficult to find in honest usable condition. They're enormous inside, wonderfully comfortable and have a character that modern estates simply don't replicate. CONDITION Bertha is an old Mercedes, not a restored concours exhibit. She's been used, she's lived a life, and I'm not going to write the usual eBay fairy tale claiming a decades-old estate is "immaculate for its age". Please study the photographs. Any marks, age-related wear or jobs worth mentioning will be shown and described honestly. I'd much rather somebody arrives knowing exactly what they're coming to see than waste everyone's time. WHY I'M SELLING I'm reducing the number of cars I own and unfortunately Bertha has drawn the short straw. There's nothing particularly complicated about the reason for sale. I have too many bloody cars. This is therefore an opportunity for somebody else to take over one of Mercedes-Benz's great old workhorses. Use it as a practical classic. Take the family away in it. Fill the back with car parts. Put the dog in it. Drive it to the tip wearing a tweed jacket and feeling unnecessarily important. Bertha doesn't care.
