MOTORHARBOUR INSURANCE GUIDE
Understand your cover before you collect the keys
Motor insurance is more than a legal box to tick. The right policy can protect you, your vehicle and other road users when something goes wrong.

WHY IT IS NEEDED
Protection for the road ahead
- You must have motor insurance to drive on UK roads; third-party cover is the legal minimum.
- Insurance can meet the cost of injury or damage you cause to other people and their property.
- Wider cover can also protect your own vehicle against accident damage, theft or fire, depending on the policy.
- A suitable policy may be required by a lender, lease provider or finance agreement.
MINIMUM COVER
Third party only
Covers injury to other people and damage to their vehicles or property when you are responsible. It does not normally pay to repair or replace your own vehicle.
Best considered when: you need the legal minimum, but always compare the price with wider cover because it is not automatically the cheapest option.
MORE PROTECTION
Third party, fire and theft
Includes third-party protection and can cover your vehicle if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Accidental damage to your own car is usually not included.
Check: theft conditions, security requirements, exclusions and how the insurer values the vehicle.
WIDEST CORE COVER
Comprehensive
Includes third-party protection and usually covers accidental damage to your own vehicle as well as fire and theft. Policies differ, so read the terms rather than relying on the name alone.
Check: excesses, driving-other-cars cover, repairs, replacement vehicle terms and personal belongings limits.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
Additional cover you may value
- Breakdown assistance and onward travel.
- Motor legal expenses cover.
- Courtesy car or guaranteed replacement vehicle.
- Protected no-claims discount.
- Key, windscreen, personal accident or misfuelling cover.
Extras can overlap with benefits you already have, so compare the cover and total cost before adding them.
YOUR CHECKLIST
Compare more than the headline price
- Confirm the drivers, mileage and type of use, including commuting or business use.
- Compare compulsory and voluntary excesses together.
- Declare modifications, claims, convictions and where the vehicle is kept overnight accurately.
- Review exclusions, cancellation charges, monthly-payment interest and renewal terms.
- Make sure cover starts before you drive the vehicle away.
Use trusted, authorised providers
Check a firm is authorised and has permission to provide the service before buying a policy.
